Minimally Invasive Procedures for Upper Back Pain Symptoms

Minimally Invasive Procedures for Upper Back Pain Symptoms

Upper back pain symptoms can have a profound impact on your daily quality of life. If you’re one of the millions of people who suffer from pain in the cervical spine, you may have experienced symptoms like numbness, weakness, tingling, or radicular pain, which is when the pain seems to begin in one area of the body, but travels to another area. If your upper back pain symptoms have become acute and you’re ready to consider surgery, there are a few things you should know about the different types of surgeries available to you.

Surgical procedures can be divided into two categories:

  • Invasive: this traditional type of surgery is commonly called open-back surgery because the surgeon must make a large incision in order to have complete access to the damaged region of the spine, essentially “opening up” the back or neck. There is usually some trauma to the surrounding muscles and other soft tissue, which means there could be a recovery period of up to a year. Unfortunately, these procedures also require a hospital stay and general anesthesia, which can be risky for some patients due to age or allergies.
  • Minimally invasive: this type of surgery is an alternative to “open” surgeries. The term “minimally invasive” means that the procedure is done with as little trauma to surrounding tissue and bone as possible. In order to achieve this, the surgeon uses a small incision, a tube, and an endoscope to gain access to the damaged area of the spine. Because the surgeon is able to view the entire procedure on a video monitor, there is no need for muscle tearing or stripping. Risk of scarring or infection is greatly reduced, and the recovery period can be as short as a few weeks. Another benefit is that general anesthesia is not required, which means that the majority of patients can go home the day of the procedure.

If you feel that a minimally invasive operation to treat your upper back pain symptoms is the right choice for you, Laser Spine Institute (LSI) can help. Our experts are extensively trained in endoscopic technology and minimally invasive procedures. We prioritize patient care and want you to find relief and renewal when you come to us for treatment.
