Upper Back Pain Can Be Effectively Treated at LSI if Surgery is Needed

The most common causes for upper back pain is an injury to the muscles or joints. These can occur from sudden trauma like a car accident or hard fall, but these conditions can also result over time from overuse and other causes. Fortunately, this type of back pain is much less common than lower back pain and neck pain, and when it does occur, it can generally be treated relatively easily with exercise and other non-invasive treatments. But in some rare instances, spinal conditions including herniated disc and degenerative disc disease can cause upper back pain. Unlike muscle strain and joint dysfunction, these conditions may require invasive treatment like surgery. If you’ve been diagnosed with a spine condition and your doctor is recommending surgery, you may want to consider laser spine surgery at Laser Spine Institute. It’s more effective than traditional back surgery, and it also has a shorter recovery time.

Here’s how it works:

  • After local anesthesia and IV sedation are administered, a small incision is made in the back over the source of the pain.
  • A series of nesting tubes are inserted into the incision, slowly and gently creating an opening at the spine by pushing muscle and other tissue aside.
  • Several tiny tools are fed down the tube including a camera, which gives the surgeon a clear view of the surgery site.
  • The surgeon performs the procedure in about 60 minutes.
  • The tools and tube are removed and the surgeon closes the incision.

The outpatient procedure is conducted in one of our surgery centers. You’ll visit the center in the two days following the surgery for physical therapy and observation. After that you’ll finish recovering at home, and you should be back to your normal activities within two weeks. If you’re like the majority of our patients—more than 85%—you’ll feel a reduction in your symptoms within three months of the surgery. Some may even feel a reduction of their upper back pain before the surgery is even over.
