How to Better Understand Back Pain Causes

How to Better Understand Back Pain Causes

It can be frustrating enough when you suffer from spine discomfort each and every day, but not understanding your back pain causes can be even more upsetting. That’s why Laser Spine Institute (LSI) believes in educating its patients about their conditions, and making sure they not only know their surgical options, but also that they understand exactly how and why their back pain has developed.

A variety of factors can contribute to back pain, including:

  • Trauma or injury
  • Overexertion
  • Hereditary factors
  • Age

One of the most common back pain causes is degenerative disc disease, which is primarily a cause of aging. As we get older, the cartilaginous pads between adjacent vertebrae begin to degrade. These intervertebral discs can tear and leak (herniated disc) or protrude (bulging disc) into the spinal column. Other degenerative spine conditions include osteoarthritis, bone spurs, and spinal stenosis. All of these conditions involve neural compression, which means the spinal nerves are pinched, trapped, or compressed by damaged areas of the spine or intervertebral discs.

Common symptoms include:

  • Travelling pain
  • Localized pain
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Weakness

If you are experiencing these symptoms and believe you’re afflicted with one of the above back pain causes, talk to your doctor about treatment options. He or she may start you on a schedule of physical therapy, medication, and rest. If you eventually decide that you want to explore surgery as an option, the surgical experts at Laser Spine Institute are ready to tell you about our minimally invasive, endoscopic procedures.

For more details about spinal conditions, or for a free review of your MRI or CT scan, contact us today. You deserve to rediscover a life without pain.
